Consider a 529 Savings Plan for Private School Tuition
The bill responsible for the recent updates to 529 plans is the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”—formally designated as H.R. 1—which was signed into law on July 4, 2025. This legislation doubled the annual K–12 expense limit per student, expanded qualified expenses for 529 withdrawals, and further broadened uses for education savings accounts starting with the 2025–2026 academic year.
Higher Annual Withdrawal Limits
- The maximum annual withdrawal per student for K–12 expenses has increased from $10,000 to $20,000, starting January 1, 2026.
- This covers all qualifying private elementary, middle, and high school expenses.
- Learn more about the 529 Plan for private education.
Expanded Qualified Expenses
- Families can now use 529 funds for a broader range of K–12 costs beyond tuition:
- Curriculum and instructional materials (textbooks, workbooks, digital resources)
- Tutoring services (with specific eligibility requirements)
- Online education subscriptions
- Standardized test fees (SAT, ACT, AP)
- Educational therapies for students with disabilities
- Dual enrollment fees for college courses taken during high school
Federal and State Tax Benefits
- 529 withdrawals for these expanded expenses remain federally tax-free if used according to federal rules.
- Mississippi offers a state income tax deduction for 529 plan contributions—up to $10,000 per year for individuals and up to $20,000 per year for married couples filing jointly. This means contributions made to a Mississippi 529 savings plan can be deducted from state taxable income, reducing state tax liability. Distributions used for qualified education expenses (including K-12 tuition within federal annual limits) are free from both federal and Mississippi state income tax
